In 1949 Chinese troops invaded Tibet claiming it was Chinese territory Most leaders around the world did not recognize this claim but did nothing to stop the aggression The government of Tibet and the Dalai Lama (spiritual leader) were forced to sign a treaty recognizing that Tibet belonged to China The Chinese government promised Tibet some autonomy but this was not upheld and in 1959 Tibet rebelled and hundreds of thousands were killed in crackdowns by the Chinese government in the 1950’s
