Physical Science Part 4-LIGHT K. Delaup Abney Elementary

Light is a kind of energy. Without light energy, you could not see. anything.

Changes light energy can cause are: – it helps plants make food and grow; – it can move cars; – it makes things visible; – it can power satellites in space.

The sun provides energy to Earth.

The bouncing of light off an object is called a reflection. reflection.

You see objects in a mirror because their light is reflected straight back at you.

Light bouncing off a smooth surface gives an image you can see.smooth surface ( Ex: mirror, shiny metal, water) Light does not reflect off of rough surfaces.rough surfaces.

There are some objects that light goes through. That's why you can see through air, water, and glass.

Light travels at different speeds in air, water, and glass.

The bending of light when it moves from one kind of matter to another is called refraction.refraction – (EX. If you place half of a toy in a glass bowl of water so that you can see half of the toy in the water and half above water (in air), the light isn't bending. So the toy will look as if it is broken in two.)toy in a glass bowl of water

Light travels through air, water, and glass. However, most matter doesn't let light pass through.

Stopping light is called absorption.

There are three ways an object can interact with light. 1. opaque - the object reflects or absorbs all light (Ex. wood, door) 2. translucent - object reflects and absorbs some light opaquetranslucent (Ex. fogged over window, wax paper) 3. Transparent - object does not reflect or absorb much light.Transparent (Ex. windows and plastic wrap.)
