Mark 1:9-13 9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
2
Mark 1:9-13 11And a voice came from heaven:
“You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
3
Mark 1:9-13 12At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

Preparation For Proclamation
Larry Cline – Hardin Valley Church Of Christ – 6/22/2014
6
1. What Jesus Sought Mark 1: “to proclaim good news” Mark 1: “to prepare good men”
7
His mission was to declare and disciple.
That should be the focus of this church and any program we develop.
8
2. What He Taught A. Acceptance of surrender & submission - necessary for ministry. Why was He baptized? 1. Validate John’s ministry - John is right. 2. Identify with humanity. 3. Comply with His destiny. - Ready to begin His journey to Calvary.
9
Jesus often looked to the future when He talked of His baptism.
Luke 12:50 “But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!” Mark 10:35 - James & John
10
B. Assurance of the Spirit.
Luke 4: And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. 15And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.
11
16And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. 17And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, 18“THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME
12
TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, 19TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.” 20And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
13
C. Assurance of Sonship – voice from Heaven.
Confidence in our personal relationship is essential. Galatians 3: not maybe or might. Galatians 4:6-7 - Spirit is to remind us. Romans 8: Listen to God.
14
D. Acceptance of Sufferings.
Romans 8 - “if indeed we share His sufferings.” When did He suffer? Mark 1:12 “at once the Spirit “sent” Jesus...” Same word used 11 times in Mark for what Jesus did to demons. Sonship doesn’t mean we are free from suffering.
15
Important? You better believe it!
Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. (Hebrews 5:8)
16
For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted. (Hebrews 2:18)
17
Hebrews 4:14-16 14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
18
3. What We Ought To Do A. Learn to apply the Word. B. Begin to affirm (accept, relish) the cross. C. Decide to accept His love.
