4 Objectives  Awareness of issues in promoting language development in science  Importance of language development in promoting thinking skills  Discuss learning activities in terms of active and passive participation  Strategies for improving literacy skills

5 Scientific Literacy  "If you cannot—in the long run—tell everyone what you have been doing, your doing has been worthless." --Nobel Laureate Erwin Schrödinger, quantum physics 1.They are conceptual tools for analysis, interpretation and communication of scientific ideas. 2.Engage student minds in complex reasoning and problem solving.

6 Listening  30% of class time is spent in listening  Typically a passive exercise by students  Can be a state of dozing  “...the boring bit before we do the practical work”  In order to encourage active participation, use questions or worksheets

7 Adapting Material  Make language simpler  Introduce new words; technical terms  Indicate searching questions  Provide diagrams needing labels  Matching exercises  Etc.

8 Talking  The problems of pupil talking...  How does group discussion evolve?  To encourage effective talk:  Ensure that the pupils are on task  Shift the discussion from procedural to substantial content  Provide clear instruction and time limits
