Allies Operation Husky called for two armies to invade Sicily. One on the southern coast and one on the southeastern coast. The assault was amphibious and supported by the navy and airplanes. The Allied forces consisted of Americans, British, and Canadians. The Eastern Task Force was led by General Bernard Montgomery and the Western Task Force was led by General George Patton.

Axis The defense consisted of the Italian 6th Army which was led by Alfredo Guzzoni. Panzer division which was led by Frido von Senger und Etterling.

Why did the Allies invade Sicily?
The Allied leaders were choosing between the islands of Sardinia or Sicily to begin the invasion of Italy. They came up with a plan to trick the Germans that they were planning on invading Sardinia.

What role did the mafia play?
The mafia helped the Americans as interpreters on the island and also by getting friendly Sicilians to give detailed maps of Sicilian harbors. It is questionable whether anything provided by the mafia actually affected the outcome of the invasion or not.

What were the results of the invasion?
Mediterranean Sea Lanes were opened Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was toppled from power very soon after the invasion.
