3 Background Chuck was born on February 13, 1923. In Myra West Virginia. But he grew up in a nearby village of Hamlin. He fought in World War II. Also in Vietnam. He was stationed all over the world during his years in the military. His favorite was Germany.

4 Obstacles When Chuck enlisted he had no college education so when he went to flight school he had to really work hard. But he made it he had made it all the way up to a general. When he brook the sound barrier, a few days before he had broken some of his ribs in a horse back ridding accident.

5 Accomplishments First person to break the sound barrier (in the X-1). Then he was the first to go over 2 times the speed of sound ( in the X-1A).

6 Chuck and Glamorous Glennis. Chuck would name all of his planes after his wife Glennis.

7 Media After he broke the sound barrier he was thought of as a hero. After the Air Force let the world know what he had done, Chuck went all over making speeches telling people want they wanted to know about his flight in the X-1.

8 Lessons You should always do what you like to do. Never underestimate your abilities. Don’t concentrate on the risks of doing something because it may cause you to not do something you will really enjoy.

9 Quotes Never wait for trouble. Rules are made for people who aren’t willing to make up their own. There’s no such thing as a natural-born pilot. You do what you can for as long as you can, and when you finally can’t, you do the next best thing. You back up but you don’t give up. You don’t concentrate on risks. You concentrate on results. No risk is too great to prevent the job from getting done.
