Nazi Foreign Policy Nazis in Power Part 1: Consent and Popularity

Foreign Policy in Nazi Germany So far we have looked at election results, the economy, law and order and youth policy in this unit. Today we will look at Foreign Policy (the defence of the country/ dealings with other countries)

Remember! The Nazi Party received a great deal of support for doing the things Weimar could not. For example: Put people to work Restore law and order Defending the country

Foreign Policy - KU One of the main criticisms of Weimar was their acceptance of the Treaty of Versailles Diktat Germans felt it left Germany weak and vulnerable to attack As we know, Hitler was strongly against the Treaty

Hitler’s Foreign Policy - KU Was aimed at destroying the Treaty of Versailles  Payment of reparations ended during Depression but Hitler took credit.  Withdrew from the League of Nations (Oct 1933)  After 1935 increased army size, built tanks, war planes etc  Remilitarised the Rhineland (1936)

 Demanded Lebensraum (living space) for the survival of the Aryan Race (mainly to be taken from Eastern Europe)  Accomplished the Anschluss (union with Austria) denied by Versailles – March 1938 All of these had been banned by the Treaty of Versailles but Hitler ignored the hated Diktat

Analysis Foreign Policy - Analysis All German people hated Versailles and were glad when Hitler ignored it Most people felt Nazi foreign policy went a long way to restoring German pride and to making Germany a strong nation once again, this gained the Nazis support.
