Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar Diane and Jeff Gerst February 5, 2013

Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council (Vatican II) defined the church as a “people of God” in solidarity, dialogue and service to the whole human race. We believe that the church hierarchy is at work implementing tactics aimed at returning the church to its pre- Vatican II days – days in which the laity could not question authority and focused on saving their own souls. Turning back the reforms of Vatican II will, in our minds, be detrimental to the church.

Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar “We must disagree with these prophets of doom, who are always forecasting worse disasters, as though the end of the world were at hand. … She [the Church] believes that, [Her] present needs are best served by explaining more fully the purport of her doctrines, rather than by publishing condemnations.” http://www.ourladyswarriors.org/teach/v2open.htm

Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et Spes

Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar “It might be said that all this and everything else we might say about the human values of the council have diverted the attention of the Church in council to the trend of modern culture, centered on humanity. We would say not diverted but rather directed.” www.vatican.va/holy_father/paul_vi/speeches/1965/documents/hf_p-vi_spe_19651207_epilogo-concilio_en.html

Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar Discontinuity and rupture Continuity and reform Benedict XVI, “It is precisely in this combination of continuity and discontinuity at different levels that the very nature of true reform consists.” http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/speeches/2005/december/documents/hf_ben_xvi_spe_2005122 2_roman-curia_en.html

Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar Religion declined not because it was refuted, but because it became irrelevant, dull, oppressive, insipid. When faith is completely replaced by creed, worship by discipline, love by habit; when the crisis of today is ignored because of the splendor of the past; when faith becomes an heirloom rather than a living fountain; when religion speaks only in the name of authority rather than with the voice of compassion ─ its message becomes meaningless. (p. 3) Heschel, A. J. (1966, c1955). God in search of man: a philosophy of Judaism. New York: Harper & Row, Publishers.

V. ERRORS CONCERNING THE CHURCH AND HER RIGHTS 19. The Church is not a true and perfect society, entirely free- nor is she endowed with proper and perpetual rights of her own, conferred upon her by her Divine Founder; but it appertains to the civil power to define what are the rights of the Church, and the limits within which she may exercise those rights. http://ia700308.us.archive.org/34/items/QuantaCuraTheSyllabusOfErrors/pius_ix_pope_quanta_cura_and_syllabus_of_err ors.pdf

Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar “…the carefully planned dismantling of the theology, ecclesiology, pastoral vision,... in order to ‘restore’ a previous, or more controllable model of church…” Bishop Kevin Dowling C.Ss.R. Cape Town, June 1, 2010 http://ncronline.org/news/vatican/catholic-social-teaching-finds-church-leadership-lacking A Bishop wearing his "cappa magna".

Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar I obey Church authority because I trust God to bring good out of their errors as well as out of their good will. Because we are all sinners anyway, all subject to error, and because if we deal charitably and humbly with one another, the Spirit will take care of the rest. But there is such a thing as an idolatry of office, and I don’t yet believe the Pope is another incarnation! (p. 72) Merton, T. (1998). The Other Side of the Mountain: The End of the Journey. (Ed. Patrick Hart) New York: HarperCollins. Thomas Merton

Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar Sharing our faith is always more than stating our convictions: it is finding our place in that conversation which has continued ever since Jesus began to talk with anyone whom he met in Galilee, and which is the life of the Church. (p. 61) Timothy Radcliffe Radcliffe, T (2008). Why Go To Church? The Drama of the Eucharist. London: Continuum.

Science, Religion, and Lunch Seminar Some say they're goin' to a place called Glory and I ain't saying it ain't a fact. But I've heard that I'm on the road to purgatory and I don't like the sound of that. Well, I believe in love and I live my life accordingly. But I choose to let the mystery be. Everybody's wonderin' what and where they all came from. Everybody's worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go when the whole thing's done. But no one knows for certain and so it's all the same to me. I think I'll just let the mystery be. I think I'll just let the mystery be. From Iris DeMent’s Infamous Angel album
