3. Today We Will Review Chapter 5 Review the events of Chapter 5 with your triad. Look at the title of Chapter 5. What pattern do you see in the chapter titles? Why do you think the author titled the chapters this way? This novel is challenging! We will be reading sections many times to help us understand the text. Your most important job while reading is to think!

4. Let’s Talk About the Setting! Chapter 5 marks a transition in the setting. Read the 2 nd learning target for today. What is an informational text? There are three charts posted in the room.  They are labeled: California Immigrating from Mexico The Great Depression of the 1930s  With your marker, travel to each chart and write down anything you know about these topics. Use the hint cards for help.

5. Hosted Gallery Walk You will start this activity with a new triad, but will end with your original triad. Sitting with your new triad, spend 15 minutes using your resource folder to complete the “Getting the Gist” note-catcher independently. Now work together to make a poster that captures the main ideas from your note-catcher. (Use words and pictures) Now we will work in new groups to look at the posters. At each poster, someone who helped create the poster should explain it to the group. When you are finished, regroup with your original triad and add any new learning to your poster that you made at the beginning of today’s lesson.

6. Summarize and Exit Ticket On an index card, answer the following prompt.  “How do you think Esperanza’s life will be different in California?”  Support your thinking with one piece of information you learned today, and one detail from Esperanza’s train journey described in Chapter 5. Review the learning targets from today and rate yourself with the fist to five protocol. Share with a partner your biggest a-ha from today! How did working with others help you be successful?

7. Tonight’s Assignment GRADE 5, MODULE 1: UNIT 2, LESSON 5 Homework: Purpose for Reading, Chapter 6: “Los Melones/Melons” (pages 81–99) What is Esperanza’s journey to the United States like? As you read, think about this question. Use your evidence flags to mark specific passages in the text to discuss with your triad. You do not need to write out answers as part of your homework; just keep track of your thinking with your evidence flags.
