3 The Launch Pad Friday, 10/5/12 The planets were all formed from a rotating mass of gas, dust clouds (some of the heavier elements.) Closer to the sun, the temperatures were so high than only the heavier elements like iron nickel, and silicates could form solid grains. The hydrogen and helium gases and ices formed together in the outer Solar System where it was much cooler.
