1
Multiplying a Polynomial by a Monomial Jonathan Gamble
2
Horizontal Method! The distributive property can be used to multiply a monomial and a polynomial. Example -2x 2 (3x 2 -7x+10) =-2x 2 (3x 2 )-(-2x 2 )(7x)+(-2x 2 )(10) =-6x 4 -(-14x 3 )+(-20x 2 ) =-6x 4 +14x 3 -20x 2
3
Vertical Method 3x 2 -7x+10 (X) -2x 2 =-6x 4 +14x 3 -20x 2
4
Simplify Expressions 4(3d 2 +5d)-d(d 2 -7d+12) =12d 2 +20d-d 3 +7d 2 -12d =-d 3 +(12d 2 +7d 2 )+(20d-12d) =-d 3 +19d 2 +8d
5
Polynomials on both sides d(d-1)+4d=d(d-8)+22 d 2 -d+4d=d 2 -8d+22 d 2 +3d=d 2 -8d+22 3d=-8d+22 11d=22 d=2
