Graphic Novel -Tells a story through dialogue & images -longer & more complex than comics Comics -magazine form -often serial Manga -means random pictures -Japanese comics -read from right to left

Inference … Even though the author does not tell you what happened, you can figure it out by the clues.

Do you know the parts of a graphic novel?

*Panels – squares or rectangles that contain a single scene. *Gutters – space between panels. *Word Balloons – contain communication between/among characters. *Thought Balloons – contain a character’s thoughts. *Captions – contain information about a scene or character. *Sound Effects – visual sound clues (POW!) This is also called…..????

*What characters say to each other. *Conveyed through word balloons. *Each word balloon has a “tail” to let you know who is talking!

* In the captions and word balloons, some words are emphasized by being BIGGER or BOLDER than others. * This lets the reader know that there is a lot of EMOTION behind these specific words.
