High Energy Physics in Australia Richard Dodson at the University of Tasmania Also reporting for University of Adelaide & Australian Defence Force Academy

High Energy Physics in Australia Places where HEAP work is undertaken: Traditionally: ADFA & Adelaide Historically: Tasmania In the future: Everywhere?

High Energy Physics in Australia Where is Spacebased Astronomical work done? Limiting myself to observing.. not theoretical So: This could be real short

High Energy Physics in Australia There are no plans to develop a space program, other than some vague statements of intent. There are commercial interests in WOOMERA Several rocket projects; e.g. The SCRAMJET of University of Queensland There is an on-going FEDSAT project:

High Energy Physics in Australia A number of ground base projects are developing well: The ADFA runs a ballon program out of Alice Springs Prof. R. Sood and his students have made a number of proportional counters for these experiements and other users.

High Energy Physics in Australia A number of ground base projects are developing well: The University of Adelaide is involved in two large projects: CANGAROO & PIERRE AUGER

High Energy Physics in Australia CANGAROO II Collaboration between Australia and Nippon for a Gamma Ray Observatory in the Outback Cerenkov: 200 GeV cutoff 10m dish FOV 3 o 0.5K pixels 0.15 o resolution CANGROO III (foundations in) will be 4 dishes in parallel (thus discriminating) 1 PhD & 2 PD's.

High Energy Physics in Australia PIERRE AUGER In the early stages. Huge collecting area. Combined Ground-based particle detector & Fluorescence (N 2 ) track detector 350-400 nmetres, energies 10 19 -10 20 eV 1600 particle detectors (24/7) 4 optical dectors: which can run ~ 15% 13,000 photomultiplers, 1.5 o resolution. FOV covers the particle detectors Combination of the two gives crucial information

High Energy Physics in Australia On the space front we have some recent progress: We have just run a workshop to develop the low energy communities proficiency with Chandra data sets. Twenty people attended, from (almost) all the major uni's (Ad/Tas/Mel/Syd ANU/CSIRO NSW) and fields

High Energy Physics in Australia This fits in perfectly with the Astro-E2 Guest Observer Program proposed here. We will follow up Radio and Optical projects into the top end of energies. We have laid the foundations for `users' who will not build the instruments yet know enough to get good science out of them. Similar to the national facilties such as Parkes, ATCA and Gemini. How should ensure that people will apply?

High Energy Physics in Australia Interests of the Attendees Black holes, optical Giant Radio remnant galaxies Pulsars, radio X-ray binaries, optical Massive star formation/Masers, radio Emission, theoretical VLBI, galaxies (cores), radio Galaxies, X-ray Instrumentation, X-ray Microquasers, radio

Extreme Physics at the University of Tasmania For Example The University of Tasmania has a 20 year pulsar monitoring program. We need to tackle fresh questions with these data. Post Glitch heating is a perfect target of oppotunity project.
