3 Discovery and Pre-Writing The writing process - The step-by-step process anyone can follow in order to complete a writing assignment, whether it's for a class or a workplace project.

4 The Writing Process The first step is to choose a topic. You need to determine what you will be writing about (think about the main idea). The topic sentence provides the main idea of the paragraph. It can also provide transitions between paragraphs.

5 Pre-Writing Pre-writing allows you to organize your thoughts before you begin to write. There are a few types of pre-writing.

6 Brainstorming Brainstorming is the simplest form of pre-writing. You can write for a few minutes about your topic. Free writing allows you to write about your topic with no worry about grammar, spelling, etc. The point is to come up with details that you can use in your paragraphs.

7 Free Writing When you free write, you take a few minutes to write about your topic. Don’t worry about topic sentences, correct format, etc. You are just working on getting details that you will use in your paragraphs.

8 Outlining The next step is to develop an outline. The outline is like a skeleton of your essay. You will come up with the order of paragraphs, but you will not yet write the paragraphs. Good idea to use the order for your project for your outline.

9 Early Draft The early draft is when you bring your brainstorming and outline together. This is the first essay that you write. You will write everything, then edit and rearrange it to develop….

10 Final Draft …the final draft. The final draft will have correct spelling, grammar, and format. This is the final project that will be turned in for a grade. Your early draft will be revised and edited to become your final draft.

12 Brainstorming Using Bullet Points Brian Barr, new architect for Goliath Building Services, just moved here from Atlanta, Georgia. now lives in the beautiful Fairmont district of downtown Philadelphia. Thirty five years old, worked in construction for sixteen years Owned and operated residential concrete company for five years He has two young children, three year old and a one year old, both boys Married for five years, have been together for eight years Hobbies include playing tennis and fishing with his family Other hobbies include his love for decorative brick and stone work, also masonry restoration

13 Brainstorming-Part 2-Bullets Went to high school here in Pennsylvania at Upper Darby high school Wright after high school attended DPT Business school, for computer tech support training Worked in construction as cement finisher for more than fifteen years When he was twenty nine years old he attended Kaplan university, he went on and got his degree in architecture In high school he was a distinguished honor roll student When graduated from Kaplan he finished at the top of his class He will be working at Goliath building service’s Philadelphia office located at 409 chestnut st. Philadelphia, PA He is the newest Architect at Goliath, He will work on the designs of the new high rise condos in Philadelphia

14 Brainstorming-Example Mr. Kenneth Hamm residing in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Started to work for a Walmart supercenter in 2005 and was let go in 2008, A Graduate of Penn-Trafford H.S. Went on to Private Industry Council to obtain his Certification in Basic Computer Skills and completed. Graduating from High School his father very proud that he had done what his father did not have the chance to. Kenneth has had many job experiences in his 26yrs of being out of school and has worked his way up through the ranks of each job that he has held. Stemmimg from being a Foreman for a major mall in Monroeville Pa. to an Account Manager for a fortune 500 Company known all over the world as Service Master. On the down turn of the economy Kenneth Hamm had decided to go back to school and get his B.A. in Business Administration and Technology.

15 Brainstorming-Example Leading counselor in the state, Award winning books, Goggle awards, COD, Kaplan University, Masters in psychology, Owns several treatment centers through out the nation, Main office in Sears Tower building in downtown Chicago, Best client compliance rate, Works with several county police departments including Kane, Will, Cook, Du Page, Grundy, Dekalb, Lake county. Shawn is very hands on with all of the clients, Wheaton Warrenville South High School, Shawn did a substance abuse benefit at Wrigley Field, Shawn has spoke at many NA and AA conventions, Shawn is in the process of building a school for substance abuse counselors, Lombard Treatment Center, HAS treatment, Shawn lives in Chicago, Married with two children, Enjoys working on many of his cars, Also has a program and a shop for his treatment clients who also enjoy working on cars, In conclusion Shawn is a respectable member in society and has helped many people.

16 Pre-Writing Brainstorming is the easiest and most straightforward method of pre-writing. Just take 15 minutes and write about your topic. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar; just worry about developing as many details as you can about your topic. After you are finished writing down all your ideas, you can then go back and correct your spelling and grammar.

17 Final Project: Your final project isn’t due until Unit 9, but we will be working on it one step at a time. The first step, pre-writing, will be done in Unit 4.

18 Unit 3 Assignments The following assignments are due by 11:59pm ET 1. Seminar (we are almost finished!)-5 points 2. Writing Lab-Two sections worth 5 points each-10 points total 3. Discussion (reply to the Discussion topic and at least two classmate replies)-20 points 4. Unit 3 Quiz-5 points
