1 Intervals The distance measured between two notes is described as an INTERVAL. The intervals we will identify are: Major Minor Perfect Tritone Octave (8ve)

2 Intervals Perfect 8ve Major 7th
Any two notes that sound together or one after the other form an interval. Unison Tritone Perfect 5th Perfect 4th Minor 6th Major 6th Minor 7th Major 7th Major 3rd Minor 3rd Major 2nd Minor 2nd Perfect 8ve Minor intervals are a semitone smaller than Major intervals. The 4th, 5th and 8ve are Perfect. 3 tones The Tritone is formed by 3 tones distance. 2 tones 1 semitone 2 semitones 3 semitones 1 tone

3 Intervals Perfect 8ve Major 7th Minor 7th Major 6th Minor 6th
Recognising intervals by ear can be tricky, and the ONLY way to improve is practice. Unison Tritone Perfect 5th Perfect 4th Minor 6th Major 6th Minor 7th Major 7th Major 3rd Minor 3rd Major 2nd Minor 2nd Perfect 8ve sounds dissonant and large. sound consonant but larger than the others. Perfect intervals sound consonant (pleasant) bright, happy and satisfying. Tritones sound scary! sound consonant but smaller than the others. sounds dissonant and tiny.

4 Learn your intervals through songs

5 Learn your intervals through songs

6 Simultaneous Intervals
Some intervals sound better than others when played together... Listen to the examples. Major 7th Dissonant, wants to resolve Minor 7th Major 6th Consonant, good harmony ‘Latin American sounding’ Minor 6th Perfect 5th Consonant, bare, drone, power chords and chants! Tritone VERY Dissonant! Perfect 4th Consonant Major 3rd Consonant ‘Best’ harmony, sounds close Minor 3rd Major 2nd Dissonant, wants to resolve Minor 2nd Try to separate the two notes in your mind to work out the interval.

7 Advanced Intervals When describing a written interval check the written distance between notes! Augmented intervals are a semitone bigger than Major or Perfect intervals. Diminished intervals are a semitone smaller than Perfect intervals. These intervals both sound the same – a Tritone, but can be described in 2 other ways. These intervals are both 5 semitones apart. When written they are considered different. The top notes are enharmonic (the same sounding note written differently. Flat Sharp Sharp Normal Normal Flat Augmented Diminished Augmented Perfect Major Diminished 4th 5th 3rd 4th 3rd 4th Aargh! How do I know which is which? Firstly decide on the number by counting the steps on the stave. Secondly decide if the note is sharpened, flattened or as it should be in the scale. Thirdly does that mean it is augmented, diminished, major or perfect?
