2 Communication Markets Division © 3M 2007. All Rights Reserved. Basic Testing  Press Autotest  Select No Fed.  Press Setup  When changes are made press OK

3 Communication Markets Division © 3M 2007. All Rights Reserved. Autotest Without FED The Autotest identifies copper problems. Vdc – Test for CO battery. Vac – Test for Induced AC. Ohms – Test for insulation problems resulting in shorts and/or grounds. Opens – Measures capacitive length. %Cap – Displays the difference in T-R and T-G Opens as a percentage. Load – Counts load coils and provides distance to first. LBal – Measures longitudinal Balance to test the electrical similarity between T to G and R to G.

4 Communication Markets Division © 3M 2007. All Rights Reserved. Vacant POTS With FED Loss – Measures loss at 1004 Hz. Noise – Measures audible noise that would be heard on active pair. PI (Power Influence) – Measure induced noise from power lines. Slope – Measures difference between 1004 Hz and 2804 Hz. RBal – Measures resistive difference between T-G and R-G. Indicates high resistance opens. VB Slope – Identifies loading problems. The FED allows additional tests that will identify potential voice problems.

6 Communication Markets Division © 3M 2007. All Rights Reserved. Capacitance Faults Complete OPEN: A fault where a conductor is cut off completely. Partial OPEN: A fault where a high resistance path developed on a conductor. ( Ex. Corroding splice) 2305 ft3400 ft1573 ft 38 3340 ft3300 ft3400 ft 48 %46 %3

7 Communication Markets Division © 3M 2007. All Rights Reserved. Capacitance Faults Cont.. SPLIT: A splicing error where one conductor of a pair (normally ‘Tip [A]’ because they the same color) is spliced to ‘Tip [A]’ of another pair. 3350 ft3400 ft3300 ft 46 %3

8 Communication Markets Division © 3M 2007. All Rights Reserved. Resistance Faults GROUND : A fault between ‘Tip [A]’ and ‘Ground’, ‘Ring [B]’ and ‘Ground’ or both conductors and ‘Ground’. 4 dB 200 Ω >999 MΩ

20 Communication Markets Division © 3M 2007. All Rights Reserved. Wideband Autotest VDC: Voltage DC which can indicate working dial tone or a cross to worker in DC is present. VAC: Voltage AC which indicates powerline induction when present Ohms: Insulation test. A low number indicates poor insulation at the fault(s) Opens: The length of the conductors. %Cap: Percent of Capacitance is the difference between the T-G and R-G length. Noise: The level of noise that is measured with some type of filter. ADSL2+ uses the G2 filter. VDSL2 uses an H (H1, H2, H3 or H4) filter. Load: Amount of load coils measured in the circuit. Can be false if DSLAM or customer equipment is connected during test. LBal: Longitudinal Balance of the circuit. Tests for circuit balance with respect to ground. Loss: The measured loss of some frequency in the range of the tested circuit. RBal: Resistive balance to compare Tip to ground and ring to ground resistance to loop.
