“It is interesting to note that the same weaknesses we have seen in research on K-12 mathematics instruction, including inadequate questioning for understanding, and lack of attention to sense making (Weiss, et al 2003), are often evident in professional development (Boyd, et al. 2003). Despite good intentions and careful planning, all too often the discussions drift away from the mathematics at hand, TEXAS REGIONAL COLLABORATIVES FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS TEACHING

especially if the participating teachers want to focus on classroom management issues. Teachers may come away with a sense of community with colleagues who have similar concerns, certainly a valuable outcome, but without the enhanced knowledge and skills that the PD was designed to promote.” Learning to Lead Mathematics Professional Development (forward by Iris Weiss, Horizon Research) TEXAS REGIONAL COLLABORATIVES FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS TEACHING
