3 Video Clip Dubois, Garvey and Pan-Africanism For Pride of For Freedom? The Debate between Marcus Garvey & W.E.B. Dubois (better)

4 How do they Compare? Pan-Africanism - The idea that people of African heritage from around the world should work together to achieve freedom and equality Originated by W.E.B. Dubois Goal of breaking down barriers between blacks and whites Black Nationalism The belief that black people around the world should create their own societies, separate and distinct from white societies Originated by Marcus Garvey Goal of racial purity and encouraging feelings of pride in “being black” and separate

5 History’s Voices W.E.B. Dubois “Finally, this (newspaper) will stand for the rights of men, irrespective of color or race, for the highest ideals of American democracy, and for reasonable but earnest and persistent attempts to gain these rights and realize these ideals.” Marcus Garvey “The new Negro, through the Universal Negro Improvement Association, is speaking for himself. The new Negro is saying to the world: “There can be no abiding peace until we are fully emancipated.”

6 Constructive Response Question Of the two approaches, which do you agree with more: Marcus Garvey’s “Back to Africa” movement which encouraged blacks to separate themselves to prove their worth independently, or W.E.B. Du Bois’ approach that blacks should work with whites, instead of separated from them, in order to achieve equality for all? Explain your answer.
