3 During the “Exploring the Five Senses” unit, students will be introduced to all five senses. They will have the opportunity to use them in a variety of activities and be able to identify them independently. Unit Objective Unit Objective

4 Students will be able to name the five senses of:   Sight   Sound   Taste   Touch   Smell

5 Why do students learn about the Five Senses?  Throughout the school year, students will use their five senses to explore and observe their environment.  Students will be able to use their five senses to describe objects and create their own conclusions.  Students will transfer their knowledge of their five senses into descriptive details used in their writing.

6 Objective Standards Chapter 112. Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Science Subchapter A. Elementary : The student is expected to: (A) identify and use senses as tools of observation; (C) gather information using simple equipment and tools to extend the senses;

7 In the Classroom:  Students will explore their sense of touch by:  Being blindfolded and guessing objects based on how they feel  Describing how objects feel  Giving examples of different textures

8 In the Classroom:  Students will listen to a variety of sounds and describe what they hear.  Use their sense of smell to guess a variety of foods and other aromas.

9 In the Classroom:  Students will explore the sense of taste by taste testing different foods (bitter, sweet, sour and salty) and comparing their results.  Students will explore sight by using different magnifying glasses and describing what they see.

10 What can you do at home?  It is always important to extend your child’s learning experience into their home. In order to continue to challenge your student, ask questions about how your child uses his or her five senses daily.

11 What can you do at home?  Go on a nature walk and describe how you are using your five senses.  Talk at the dinner table about what you are eating. What different tastes and smells are you experiencing?  Write about something you did. Use words that describe what you saw, how it smelled, and what you heard.
