Time Limit: 8 minutes Budget : $175 Minimum: 3 Vehicles Maximum: 10 Vehicles Power Sources: 3 out of 7 SMALL vehicles must fit in box or cube 6 inch by 6 inch by 6 inch 1

Regardless of what we tell you during this training, our presentation is “our interpretation” of the challenge and the International Challenge Master can only give a definitive ruling on a teams’ questions. We strongly suggest for any questionable topic or specific way your team intends to do something that you need to submit a formal clarification. 2

Time Limit: 8 minutes Budget : $175 Minimum: 3 Vehicles Maximum: 10 Vehicles Power Sources: 3 out of 7 SMALL vehicles must fit in box or cube 6 inch by 6 inch by 6 inch Design and build SMALL Vehicles Vehicles travel to and stop in scoring zones Vehicles attempt to avoid DANGER zone Attempt to score highest number of zone points Choose level of Danger (risk and reward) Create story which Integrates dangers of vehicle travel from the vehicle's viewpoint 3

Vehicle – a device that can be propelled over a distance 8

Vehicle Rules Intent is a land vehicle, traveling on floor Minor UNINTENTIONAL bouncing or skips will be allowed NO POINTS if violates land vehicle intent Team choses 3 to 10 vehicles Vehicles can be same or different Each must have UNIQUE and visible number from 1 to 10 Once vehicles leaves prep area, number cannot be changed or switched or else NO POINTS for those vehicles * Team choses ONE vehicle to be scored for technical design and innovation (2.b) 9

NO ZONE POINTS for vehicle(s) adding additional parts after prep area measurement Vehicles that have not traveled outside of any part of the Start Zone are allowed to replace defective or damaged parts. (parts must be similar) NO ZONE POINTS for Vehicles replaced in entirety. Vehicle rules continued Must fit within 6in x 6in x 6 in cube or box Initially measured in Prep Area and May be measured a second time at end of presentation NO ZONE POINTS for vehicle(s) that do not meet this size requirement (D1) Parts or decorations accidentally fallen off not considered to be part of vehicle at end of presentation. The fallen off parts are considered neutral if another vehicle touches a fallen off part. Vehicles designed or engineered to intentionally lose parts during zone travel will be considered oversized vehicles and will receive NO ZONE POINTS 10

Must use 3 or more different types of power sources Each vehicle propulsion system may use 1 or more power source[s] The Team will select 3 DIFFERENT types of propulsion systems to be scored Propulsion – each vehicle will be propelled by team-designed Propulsion System. 11 #2 October 24, 2012 In the Challenge, A.2.b should read: “Any Vehicle may have the same design, Propulsion System and construction as another Vehicle, or it may be different.” Also, in the Challenge, A.2.e should read: “Each Vehicle will be propelled by a team-designed Propulsion System. Teams must use three or more different types of Power Sources from the following list to propel their Vehicles. Each Vehicle's Propulsion System may use one or more Power Source[s]. The team will select three different types of Propulsion Systems to be considered for their Propulsion System score (D.2.a).” The 7 allowable types of power sources Wind-up – energy of tension or compressed mechanical system Pneumatic – energy from moving or stored gas or air Gravity – gravitation force only, vehicle only release, no pushing by team members else NO ZONE POINTS Electric Motor – propelled by electrical to mechanical conversion Hydraulic – liquid pressure and flow Thermal – temperature change (Refer Rules of Road for safety) Magnetic – attraction or repulsion of objects magnetic fields

Must use 3 or more different types of power sources Each vehicle propulsion system may use 1 or more power source[s] The Team will select 3 DIFFERENT types of propulsion systems to be scored Propulsion – each vehicle will be propelled by team-designed Propulsion System. 12 Example: Vehicle 1 Propulsion – Rubber band windup drive Vehicle 2 Propulsion – Rubber band windup drive Vehicle 3 Propulsion – Gravity drive (ramp in start area) Vehicle 4 Propulsion – Gravity and Rubber band windup drive (ramp) Vehicle 5 Propulsion – Electric Motor drive propulsion Assuming Vehicles 1 and 2 are the same, there are 4 different propulsion systems with these 5 vehicles. There are also 3 different power sources; windup, gravity, and electric Only Vehicle 4 uses more than one power source for its propulsion system.

Vehicle Travel Released in any order Released one at time Completely begin within Start Zone Previously released vehicle entirely out of start zone Not attached to any other vehicle Cannot be pushed by team member Team member cannot provide propulsion of vehicle Must use one or more of the 7 allowable power sources Travel freely after leaving start zone, i.e. no tracks External guidance contained entirely in start zone is allowed. TEAMS MAY NOT use team controlled external devices like remote controls to direct the motion of the vehicles 13

Danger Points Decision Optional – nothing added or deducted if choose not to accept DANGER. One random number drawn in launch area Team then has one minute to make decision If Decision is to accept Danger will deduct 25 points if Previously released vehicle not entirely out of start zone Lands completely within DANGER ZONE Touches team member or other objects except for other vehicles as it travels Zone 1 --> +10 points Zone 5 --> +25 points Zone 10 --> +50 points Start Zone or not attempted --> Zero points Points are added, thus if in zone 1, you would get 1 plus 10 for a total of 11. 14

Zone Point Rules In zone if any vehicle part is in ( does not have to touch) Taped lines part of higher point zone Final location at end of presentation. NO Zone Point Rules Any vehicle part in Start Zone Touches team member Touches anything other than taped lines on tournament floor or another vehicle Team members must not touch or move until appraisers have completed their scoring 15

Story Dangerous situation told from viewpoint of vehicle(s) Integrate into vehicle travel Characterization of vehicle(s) i.e mannerisms, appearance, dialogue etc. 16

Team Choice Elements Rules are always the same: Teams must present TWO creations to show off their interests or creative skills Create anything they wish including props, music, gadgets, costumes, physical actions, rhymes, etc. Both items must be presented within the 8 minutes to receive a score Must have a meaningful connection to the overall theme and presentation Must NOT be a specific item already required or receiving a score elsewhere; can be a standalone part of something already receiving a score, but NOTHING can receive a double score Both TCEs will be evaluated in three ways: Creativity and Originality Quality, Workmanship and Effort Integration into overall Presentation Each worth up to 30 points, making TCE’s worth up to 60 points total DO NOT overlook the importance of TCEs! 17

18 #1. October 3, 2012 In the Rules of the Road, page 7, 5-Team Pack, #5, it should say: The 5-Team Pack may be purchased by school districts, states, provinces, program Affiliates (e.g., the New Jersey DI Affiliate) or any larger parent organization (e.g., Boy Scouts of America) for use as specified in item #3 above. On the same page, Institutional Customer 30+ Team Pack, #2, it should be: After the initial purchase of 30 teams, the Institutional Customer may purchase additional teams, in any quantity, at the Institutional price. The Institutional Customer may distribute the Team Program Materials to any team for which it is fully responsible.
