Personal Life Born on June 17, 1832 in London Enrolled at the Royal College of Chemistry at the age of 15 ! He became superintendent of the meteorological department at the Radcliffe Observatory in Oxford in 1854 Appointed lecturer in chemistry at the Chester training college in 1855 He was knighted in 1897, and in 1910 received the order of merit

Experiments and Contributions He discovered the metal Thallium in 1861 through the use of spectrum analysis In 1873, he determined the atomic weight of the new element in a research which is still a model of analytical precision He was also identified the first know sample of Helium He was the inventor of the Crookes Radiometer, which today is made and sold as a novelty item He also developed the Crookes Tubes, investigating canal rays He invented one of the first instruments for the study of nuclear radioactivity He was a pioneer in the construction and use of vacuum tubes for the study of physical phenomena.

What Impact does some of these do?

Inventions and Discoveries Crookes Tube Nothing

Thallium Used in treatment of skin infections Used as a dopant for sodium iodide crystals in gamma radiation detection equipment Radioactive thallium 201 is used for diagnostic purposes, particularly in stratification in patients with coronary artery disease Need I say more

Crookes Radiometer AKA a lightmill Neat little thing

Awards and Recognitions Knighted in 1897 Received Order of merit in 1910 various times he was president of the Chemical Society, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Society of Chemical Industry, the British Association, and, from 1913 to 1915, of the Royal Society
