2 Core principles and many variations The focus of learning is problem- or theme- centered with disciplinary knowledge integrated in ways to address that problem or theme. The academic content is presented in both its current state of knowledge along with attention to its underlying assumptions and historical development. In other words, student will learn not only what is currently accepted but also that “knowledge” is created and shaped by historical forces. This allows them to think reflexively about what they are learning.

3 Core principles The academic learning in the classroom is conducted within groups with members learning from and supporting one another. By working together individually and in groups, students learn the very real and important differences among them and acquire skills in listening, problem solving and collaboration. A critical assumption of learning communities is that learning conducted through social interaction stimulates more questions and thought that lead to greater complexity of learning. While students are evaluated on the quality of their academic learning, they are not placed in competition with each other..

4 Core principles Students exercise as much authority over their learning as is possible. This can occur through assignments and selection of projects. Students represent their learning in a tangible project or product that also contributes to the learning of all the community members. Learning, thus, becomes their learning and is addressed to their classmates and faculty member Faculty members plan together and/or coordinate class content and assignments to promote integration and social interaction.
