High School

SPS5. Students will compare and contrast the phases of matter as they relate to atomic and molecular motion. a. Compare and contrast the atomic/molecular motion of solids, liquids, gases and plasmas. b. Relate temperature, pressure, and volume of gases to the behavior of gases SPS7. Students will relate transformations and flow of energy within a system. a. Identify energy transformations b. Investigate molecular motion as it relates to thermal energy changes in terms of conduction, convection, and radiation c. Determine the heat capacity of a substance using mass, specific heat, and temperature. d. Explain the flow of energy in phase changes through the use of a phase diagram

 You work on an ice cream cart at Six Flags, and you have had customers complain that the ice cream is too soft and melts too quickly after they purchase it.  If sales continue to fall because of this problem, YOU WILL BE FIRED!!  Currently the carts use H 2 0 (water) ice to keep the ice cream cold. You need to come up with an alternative solution to H 2 O ice. Your supervisor has suggested dry ice would be better, but needs you to scientifically prove it is better.  You need to investigate if we can make our own dry ice, as it may be too expensive to purchase

Create a business proposal for the CTO (chief thrill officer) that :  Proves that dry ice is better that water ice  Depicts phase changes from a particle perspective  Shows phase change graphs comparing dry ice to water ice  Explains heat transfer from particle perspective  Calculates the heat capacity of the dry ice  Describes how dry ice is made as it relates to the gas laws

You will study:  Matter phases from particle perspective  Gas laws  Heat transfer  Heat capacity

 Make a list including any and all things known relative to the identified problem.

 Make a list of what needs to be learned to solve the problem indicated.  Reference the problem and the solution details in order to facilitate the making of this list  Reference the Business Proposal Template

 Submit a written business proposal utilizing the selected template
