2.  There’s a direct link to it from the Shimizu Lab Website or go to www.dehs.umn.eduwww.dehs.umn.edu  All personnel are responsible for ALL hazardous chemicals they work with.  The guidebook covers how to handle, label, and dispose of hazardous waste.

3. 1) Evacuate the area and shut off electrical equipments. Alert others using signs or tape. 2) Provide Aid: immediately remove contaminated clothing, flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes, and seek medical attention if necessary. 3) Confine the area. 4) Call DEHS at 6-6002 for chemical spills of highly reactive or toxic, during work hours. Call 911 during after hours. 5) Clean up, using appropriate cleaning agents: Bleach, alcohol, or the spill kit.

4.  All chemicals should be stored in leak proof bottles and have leak proof secondary containments.  Labels should contain the full chemical name, no abbreviations/chemical formula.  List all components and percentage within the bottle.  Date  pH  Use yellow Hazardous Waste Labels provided by DEHS.

5.  Use Autoclave trash bags for all infectious wastes. Autoclave at 121 degrees celsius for 60 min.  Red Bags can be used, however it costs 10x more for the University to dispose of Red Bags, and they’re only intended for use when there are no autoclaves around.  No Sharps or Liquids in trash  DO NOT overflow trash, fill it up to ¾ full.  All sharps should go in Sharps containers.  All Liquids can be decontaminated with 1 part bleach to 10 part liquids for 15 minutes, then it can go down the drain.

6.  Serological Pipets goes into the autoclave trash.  Pipet tips goes into the bleach waste bucket. Everyone is responsible for emptying the tip waste once it’s full. Tips can go into the trash and the liquid wastes can go down the drain.  Monitor the liquid waste container, empty it if more than ¾ full.  Clean up any spills, wipe down the work area, and keep the hoods clutter free.  Pipet Aids need to remain at their designated hoods.  At the end of the day, leave UV light on for 15-30 minutes, then shut off all exhaust to help prolong the life of the filter.

7.  Wear appropriate gloves for all procedures.  Gloves can only be worn in workspaces. Not at the computer or outside of the lab area.  Wear goggles and face shields when necessary.  Lab coats or disposable gowns when working with hazardous chemicals and/or mice.

8.  Doors cannot be blocked or propped open under any circumstances. Ex) LN tanks cannot block fire doors.  Eye washes need to be checked once a week and documented.  Safety showers are located along the main corridor, checked by Building Management annually.  No open toe shoes.  No shorts or loose clothings.

9.  SOP template can be obtained at www.dehs.umn.edu/ressafety_rsp.htm www.dehs.umn.edu/ressafety_rsp.htm  All SOPs should include safety measures that need to occur during each procedures and procedures to be followed in the case of any spills, exposures, or accidents.  All procedures in the lab must have a corresponding SOP.

11.  Keep benchtops clutter free  Put things back in place after use.  Wipe down counters before and after use.  Drying racks should be cleared once equipments are dried.  Everyone should help monitor the CO2 tanks for our incubators and notify me or change out the tanks when it’s low.
