The Male Reproductive System What’s it all about?

Quick Start! Fold a piece of paper into thirds to make a 3 column chart. List the external male reproductive organs in column 1. List the internal male reproductive organs in column 2. Note any questions you have about the structure or function in column 3.

External Male Reproductive Organs Scrotum: loose sack of skin that hangs outside the body. It holds the testes. Testes are the male sex glands They have TWO main functions… 1. Manufacture testosterone: Male sex hormone 2. Produce sperm: male reproductive cells

External Male Reproductive Organs The temperature of the testes must be a few degrees lower than normal body temperature Scrotum keeps testes at the right temperature by either keeping them away or closer to the body.

External Male Reproductive Organs Sperm are produced in a section of the testes called the seminiferous tubules. Once they are produced, sperm move into the epididymis: highly coiled structure located on the back side of each of the testes. Penis: tube-like organ that functions in both sexual reproduction and elimination of body wastes Semen: mixture of sperm and glandular secretions

Internal Male Reproductive Organs Vas deferens: long tube that connects each epididymis with the urethra Urethra: carries urine and sperm out of the body. It CANNOT carry both at the same time

Reproductive Glands Purpose is to add secretions that support the sperm Semen consists of sperm and secretions from the testes, seminal vesicles, prostate, and the Cowper’s glands

Seminal Vesicles Contribute most secretions to semen, about 60%. Help make the sperm mobile and provide them with nourishment Empty into the ejaculatory ducts then travel with the sperm into the urethra

Prostate Gland & Cowper’s Gland Lies just below bladder and surrounds the urethra Secretes a milky, alkaline fluid that mixes with the sperm The Cowper’s gland are just below the prostate Secrete a clear mucus into the semen Helps carry and protect the sperm by lubricating the urethra

Concerns About the Male Reproductive System Nocturnal Emission: Relief of semen by ejaculating while sleeping. Called ‘wet dreams’ and are normal Hernia: Tear that allows part of intestine to push through abdominal wall into scrotum Sterility: Inability of male to produce offspring. Sperm may be weak, sparse, nonexistent. Can be caused by overheating of testicles, exposure to certain chemicals, problems with epididymis, vas deferens, urethra. STD’s can also be a cause

Concerns About the Male Reproductive System Testicular Cancer - Occurs most often between ages of 14 and 40 - Main risk is undesended testes - First sign is a lump or enlargement in testes - Regular self-examination is key for early detection

Concerns About the Male Reproductive System Prostate Cancer: - Symptoms include frequent/painful urination - Blood in urine - Lingering pain in back/hips/pelvis

Concerns About the Male Reproductive System
