The EXTR@Web project managed by EW-OTH-GCI-0056

The Transport Research Knowledge Centre Status of EXTR@Web July 2004 and outlook

Content 1.Framework & methods 2.Key achievements to date 3.… in the pipeline … & further schedule for key activities

Framework & Methods

What is EXTR@Web ? FP5 Accompanying measure Duration from Sept 2002 to Aug 2006 Political, institutional and hands-on support from ERA states through Advisory and Benchmark Groups Consortium of 8 partners and 16 sub- contractors

Operational networks Geographic Sub-contractors Extended Network: Relaying information ERA level: Advisory Group Benchmark Group Commission level: Project Officers DG TREN DG RESEARCH DG INFSO DG ENV National level (ERA- wide): governmental and public research institutions Institutional Network: Selection and validation Project Network: Collection, analysis and dissemination EXTR@Web consortium Networks of excellence Transport professional networks & associations (eg UITP, FEHRL) Transport stakeholders

The Reporting Scheme The Common European Transport Research Reporting Scheme released in May 2003 and publicly available (web) since June 2003 1. Programme Form 2. Project Profile (start) 3. Progress Summary 4. Result Summary (completion) 5. Final Report (completion) The 5 elements of the Reporting Scheme

Transport dimensions - 30 themes for analysis -

Priorities of project coverage  Every project within the TRKC will be listed with a web link and/or other contact details  For some 2.400 projects the most relevant themes out of 30 will be identified For some 1.000 projects the Reporting Scheme will be applied (project profile, progress summary, result summary) and the final report will be made available Out of all priority 2 projects, the 600 most important ones will be chosen for analysis at three levels Priority 3 Priority 1 Priority 2

Process for project data preparation and analysis Project identification, selection & clustering member states + consortium/subcontractors Consolidated database Allocation of projects to theme leaders (EU) & to country responsible (national) Contacts the project co-ordinator, requests the completion of reporting forms Project co-ordinator not available or fails to provide reporting forms Project profile Progress summary Result summary (Final report) Project is important or needed for analysis, theme leader/country responsible provides profile and result summary Priority 3: Labelling Priority 2: Labelling Priority 1: Labelling & project level analysis per label Thematic analysis 30 volumes

Three levels of analysis 2. Thematic analysis 1. Project level analysis 3. Policy level analysis

Analysis level 1: Project level analysis Through the labelling process for every project those themes out of 30 in total have been identified where the project contributes significantly. For every such theme a short and concise paragraph (possibly structured with bullet points) will be written to present the key findings of the project in relation to the objectives of the theme

Analysis level 2: Thematic analysis For each of the 30 themes a separate paper will be written A Thematic Paper comprises: Scope of the theme Policy context Sub-themes structuring and RTD objectives Key findings of sub-themes (here all the paragraphs of the project level analysis of contributing projects give the main input in a balanced way) RTD achievements related to the theme and outlook Annex: Contributing projects

Analysis level 3: Policy level analysis Whilst the 30 themes are more generic and fixed for the running time of EXTR@Web this type of analysis should give the flexibility to provide information on ad hoc policy priorities. These are typically composed of several themes. The condensed information given in various thematic papers will be used to write policy brochures. The titles or kind of policy priorities are a matter of ad hoc requirements

Benefits of analysis for the TRKC user Project level Theme level Policy level Brief and concise analysis of the key findings of a project in relation to the « policy objectives » and / or « tools » attributed as key labels 1.Summary of key findings of all projects contributing to a theme, taking into account the policy context Three Annual Thematic Research Summaries 2.« Do-it-yourself-analysis » list of all projects’ key findings for a given theme Key findings of selected projects or sub-clusters of projects that contribute to a policy objective or policy priority Policy Brochures

Key achievements to date

Thematic structure and definitions a concise theme definition an overview of topics included in the theme reference to its significance a list of sub-themes to be used for later analysis of project results One comprehensive reference document defines transport research and provides for all 30 themes

First Programme Compendium Based on the Synthesis of selected national transport RTD activities in Europe, the first guide to ERA national programmes was published in December 2003 on the web site
