2 We study genetics in order to: A. Understand how existing individuals developed. B. To make predictions regarding the next, yet unborn generations. For this we need to understand Principles of Probability and Ratio

3 Principles of Probability Probability – the likelihood that a particular event will occur, expressed in percentage. It predicts the estimated, average number, not the exact number of occurrences.

4 Ratio: The proportion between specific outcomes. Divide the probabilities by the smallest one: Consider two possible occurrences: * If there is a 75% chance for one, and 25% for the other, then the ratio between them is:75:25 = 3:1 ratio * If there is 50% chance for both: 50:50 = 1:1 ratio.
