Presented by: Airport Full Service Consultant Services for BIG BEAR AIRPORT Prepared for: Association of California Airports ACA Conference Session 6 INNOVATIVE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF AIRPORT WASHRACK FACILITY

BACKGROUND AND ELIGIBILITY 2  Purpose and advantages of an aircraft washrack  Aesthetics – protect investment  Reduce corrosion potential  Opportunity to closely inspect aircraft  Provides additional feature/facility for airport users  FAA Eligibility  Classified at national priority ranking: OT, OT, WR  Low NPR, but is eligible for FAA AIP funding for non-primary airports with non-primary entitlements

PLANNING ANALYSIS 3  Visible and easily identifiable  Ease of ingress and egress  Limited FAA guidance, rely on local requirements  Location, Location, Location

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS AND ALTERNATIVES  Type of aircraft at the airport: General aviation and/or crop dusting aircraft  Type of system is predicated on local jurisdiction for disposal of excess water  Basic operation of washrack system (prior to Benton washrack)  Additional considerations 4

CASE STUDY ON BENTON AIRPARK 5  Pre-project washrack situation  Manual water valve  Runoff and storm water quality compliance concerns

 Siting considerations for proposed washrack location  Existing location and accessibility limitations – not viable  Desirable location adjacent to the restaurant and FBO (also provides fuel service)  Adjacent to transient parking ramp  Proposed location does not impede existing operations or involve valuable space 6 BENTON AIRPARK WASHRACK Existing Site Proposed Site

 City of Redding requirements for operation and water quality Requested additional control devices to direct and control flow from stormwater runoff into the storm sewer versus washwater into the sanitary sewer system via a clarifier. Resulted in system currently in place. 7 CASE STUDY ON BENTON AIRPARK, continued

8  Operation of system in-place  Checks in place to ensure proper operation  Valves open and close to direct water  Level switch in case of system blockage  High water level alarm

 Ease of maintenance  Vertical flow clarifier with “Liftmate” cover  Free draining yard hydrant to prevent freezing  Rigid utility board with secure equipment installation  Sediment and hydrocarbon inserts for area drains to minimize blockage potential  Area light for illumination 9 CASE STUDY ON BENTON AIRPARK, continued

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED FOR NEXT TIME  Water pressure test after connection to the water source  “or equal” equipment considerations and how this may affect infrastructure installation  Sanitary sewer tie-in and design assumptions  Commercial hose fittings = marine fittings, this will likely be an issue if nozzle is not provided 10
