11. A helping verb… helps another verb show action and is added before another verb to make a verb phrase. It cannot stand alone. Sometimes, the phrase can be separated. For example, –The students had turned their papers in before the bell. –The teachers have been informed of the writing prompt or –The students were also informed of the prompt.
