2. What are fossils? A fossil is a type of animal or plant that got covered with dirt, clay, or mud in the ground and has turned to stone. How are fossils formed?

3. First the animals has to die
First the animals has to die. It falls to the ground and starts to get buried.

4. Then, the soft parts of the animal start to decompose
Then, the soft parts of the animal start to decompose. Only the hard parts are left.

5. Next, layers of sediment will cover the bones
Next, layers of sediment will cover the bones. Minerals will cover the bones. Minerals will began to fill the bones.

6. Then, over many years more layers of sediment will pile on the bones

7. Finally, it is a fossil ready to be discovered
Finally, it is a fossil ready to be discovered. A paleontologist can dig up the fossils from the ground.

8. Fossils are very rare because they are difficult to find.
