3 GIS in Prevention, County Profiles, Series 3 (2006) 3. Geographic and Historical Notes Allen County is located in northeastern Indiana. It is bordered by Ohio on the east, Adams and Wells to the south, Huntington to the southwest, Whitley to the west and Noble and DeKalb to the north. U.S. Highways 24 and 30 and Interstate Highway 69 cross Allen County. Major tree species are oak, hickory, elm, ash, cottonwood, maple, beech and birch. Though most of the County is part of the Indiana and Ohio Till Plain, a smaller area belongs to the Erie-Huron Lake Region land resource area. Most of the terrain is rather level, except in northern and west-central parts of the county where it has a slight slope. This county is in Eastern Time Zone and observes DST. Average daily January temperatures are 16 ٥ / 31 ٥ in January are 62 ٥ / 84 ٥ in July. Annual precipitation is 34-37 and snowfall 28-32 inches. Typically the first freeze of the season is around October 5-10 (except in the northwest from October 10-15) and the last freeze around May 5-10 th, so there are around 145-155 growing days. Main crops include hay, corn for grain, soybeans, and winter wheat and oats. Main vegetable crops are sweet corn, pumpkins and cantaloupes. A special crop is popcorn. Main natural resources include construction sand and gravel, crushed stone, and petroleum. Cities include the county seat, Fort Wayne, plus New Haven and Woodburn. Towns include Huntertown and Monroeville. Townships with population of over 30,000 include Adams, St. Joseph, Washington, and Wayne. 3. Geographic and Historical Notes Famous sons and daughters of Allen County include actresses Carole Lombard of Hollywood fame and Shelley Long (1949-), Emmy Award winner best known for Cheers, both born in Fort Wayne; fashion designer Bill Blass, also born in Fort Wayne (1922); Little Turtle (1751-1812), a military leader of the Miami Indian tribe who defended his tribe from attacks by the French and in the Battle of the Fallen Timbers. Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman, 1774-1845) died in Fort Wayne.
