1 Battelle is a not-for-profit S&T enterprise that fulfills its purpose in part by operating laboratories  Translating scientific discovery to innovative applications  Advancement of learning and better education of men and women for employment Education Battelle Charitable Distributions Community Needs

2 Battelle manages or co-manages five DOE national laboratories Brookhaven Pacific Northwest National Renewable Energy Lab (single-program) $2.5 billion expenditures 15,000 staff 32 scientific user facilities Oak Ridge Idaho National Lab Battelle Columbus, OH

3 FY06 PNNL Business Facts Approximately $753 million in business volume 4,200 staff Space: 2 million ft 2, 0.5 million ft 2 in labs $256 million in purchases for goods and services PNNL is not Hanford

4 PNNL solves national challenges by delivering science, technologies, and leadership to: Mission Outcomes Strengthen U.S. scientific foundations for innovation Prevent and counter acts of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction Increase U.S. energy capacity and reduce dependence on imported oil Reduce the effects of energy generation and use on the environment

5 PNNL innovations with everyday impact Optical digital recording Improved spark plugs Implants coating Chevy Malibu Maxx lift gate Holography

6 RFID Technology General classification: Sensors (medical devices, energy, information technology, bioinformatics, biomaterials, engineering software, computer graphics, and others) Title of research project: Radio Frequency Identification Tags Description: miniature radio frequency tags that can be used for wireless monitoring of a wide variety of items (such as inventory control or locating of items). RF tags can locate items or communicate with each other over varying ranges or can gather environmental information. Our tags offer long read-write range, simultaneous reading, and input/output control. We have patented three types of RF tags, passive, semi-passive and active. Each offers capabilities that make it better suited for particular applications, from small, low-cost tags to systems with long range and unique functionality options.

7 RFID Continued Current IP protection: patents issued and patents pending Potential applications: 1.Tracking and monitoring of inventory, files, bank notes, individual engine or machine components, medical products. 2.Tracking or monitoring animals for herd control or to research habitat. 3.Monitoring conditions of engine or vehicle components 4.Tracking and locating sensitive items 5.Detecting out-of-normal conditions (such as temperature extremes) that may affect product reliability or performance. Status of Commercial Development: mature
