5 LOCATING SOURCES If you are having trouble finding sources, try the Kaplan library (see the Kaplan library instructions on announcement page). Here are some sources that may help: Cornell Legal Institute, George Washington, Georgetown Law Library, local law libraries, public policy organizations, Lexis, Kaplan library, federal government websites, and here is an exhaustive list of legal websites: http://www.hg.org/commercial.html http://www.ih2000.net/ira/legal.htm (copy these links and save – and use) Try the search engine, Google Scholar. Resources cannot include Wikipedia or similar (Answers.com, about.com) These are not scholarly sites nor legal in nature.

6 A little about Plagiarism…. You may not copy and paste anything from a source without using quotes (or indenting long block of text) You need to give credit to the original author of the work –provide sources (see the plagiarism PowerPoint under Announcements). Use of quotations – minimal. Make sure you understand and read over the plagiarism PowerPoint if you are unsure about this.

9 Sources Sources cannot include Wikipedia or similar (Answers.com, about.com) These are not scholarly sites nor legal in nature. Do use sources such as: Cornell Legal Institute, George Washington, Georgetown Law Library, local law libraries, public policy organizations, Lexis, Kaplan library, federal government websites, and here is an exhaustive list of legal websites: List of legal websites: http://www.hg.org/commercial.html ; http://www.ih2000.net/ira/legal.htm http://www.hg.org/commercial.html http://www.ih2000.net/ira/legal.htm Try the search engine, Google Scholar.

10 Your next step… Start researching using the sources we’ve discussed. Keep track of the website, author, title, so you can properly cite in your bibliography. After you have gathered your sources, you will begin to work on your annotated bibliography.  Annotated bibliography is a document that summarizes your research sources and their relevance, currency, and usefulness to the research project.  You will critically read and analyze the sources you have found. See the example in Unit 3 of how to prepare an annotated bibliography.
