1 Submission doc.: IEEE 802.19-15/0071r0 August 2015 Alaa Mourad, BMW GroupSlide 1 Coexistence Management in the 2.4GHz ISM Band in the Automotive Environment – Next Steps Date: 2015-08-19 Authors: Notice: This document has been prepared to assist IEEE 802.19. 2 Submission doc.: IEEE 802.19-15/0071r0 August 2015 Alaa Mourad, BMW GroupSlide 2 Abstract This document provides the possible next steps, which could be done to study the wireless coexistence in an automotive environment. Possibility to establish an interest group to focus on this issue.

3 Submission doc.: IEEE 802.19-15/0071r0 August 2015 Alaa Mourad, BMW GroupSlide 3 Background The IEEE 802.15.2 task group studied the coexistence in the 2.4GHz ISM band and the results were submitted in 2003. The submitted recommendations are quite old, mainly due to:  New developed standards for WLAN (like, 802.11n)  New scenarios popped up due to the increased usage of WLAN and Bluetooth (like In-vehicle scenario) Therefore the coexistence problem should be studied again in order to avoid chaos, especially in the automotive environment [1].

4 Submission doc.: IEEE 802.19-15/0071r0 August 2015 Alaa Mourad, BMW GroupSlide 4 Next Steps Establish an interest group to review the submitted recommendations by the 802.15.2 task group, and focus on the automotive domain due to predicted increased usage of connectivity services in vehicles [1]. Extensive measurements are needed to check the performance of both Bluetooth and WLAN in different scenarios in vehicle. Metrics for the performance of coexistence techniques should be defined and tests to verify their effectiveness should be performed. Further steps depend on the achieved results.

5 Submission doc.: IEEE 802.19-15/0071r0 August 2015 Alaa Mourad, BMW GroupSlide 5 conclusion Different wireless systems (mainly at 2.4 GHz ISM band) have migrated into the vehicle environment, with expected drastically increase in the coming years. An Interest group could be a starting point to study the coexistence in this domain due to the importance of this issue for both industry and society.
