Informal & non-formal learning in the Coach Development Programme for Ireland (CDPI) Informal learning is catered for on coach and tutor education courses through the writing of outcomes which are broader than the content/tasks covered in any particular module & is assessed accordingly. On this basis, informal learning can contribute to a qualification which is/will be placed on the NQF Informal learning is assumed in the ‘off-course’ elements of courses and in the periods after and between them, but at present is not directly accounting for or contributing to a qualification on the NQF

16. Informal & non-formal learning in the Coach Development Programme for Ireland (CDPI) Non-formal learning has not been part of the CDPI in the past but a number of NGBs are experimenting with different formats for their coach education programmes (e.g. communities of practice). At present these are not being accredited or forming part of a qualification but it is hoped that they will do so in the near future. Informal & Non-formal learning IS taken into account when someone is applying to undertake a course (coach, tutor or tutor trainer) in terms of APL (Accredited Prior Learning), but at present this is the only occasion on which these forms of learning are recognised.

Informal & non-formal learning in the Coach Development Programme for Ireland (CDPI) Part of Coaching Ireland’s remit is to agree/work with/accredit coach education programmes and work with the Qualifications bodies. The Government, nor the Irish Institute of Sport nor the 2 Sports Councils (Irish Sports Council & Sport Northern Ireland) dictate where the coach education programmes fit into the NQF. Ireland/Coaching Ireland is working towards accrediting all forms of learning within the CDPI, but we are not there yet, indeed there is some way to go! A Contentious issue is who gets to decide what the outcomes should be and how were they decided ?
