9 Proposal for Research in Zaire Abstract The Ebola virus, a type of hemorrhagic fever, has the potential to cause widespread devastation particularly in parts of Zaire where one of the hottest strains of Ebola has been documented. Ebola Zaire has the highest rate of casualty. Among those infected, 90% will die. The first outbreak occurred in 1976 at the Yambuku Hospital in Zaire during which 280 died from infection. Ebola Zaire is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids. Because the virus causes extreme hemorrhaging, health care professionals must take precautions to avoid contact with infected blood. Symptoms of Ebola Zaire mirror those of malaria in the early stages. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, chest pain and seizures. 50-60 % of cases exhibit severe hemorrhaging from mucus membranes however death is caused by the shut down of multiple organs rather than blood loss. In Zaire, reduced access to medical care creates a greater potential for epidemic.
