1 7th Grade Science Key Concepts

2 General Info. To recall important information from 7th grade science, focusing on key standards Questions??? Please raise hand and make sure that it has to do with topic Notes To recall important information from 7th grade science, focusing on key standards Questions??? 3 EARTH & SPACE SCIENCES Materials move from the land, to water, to the air - Lithosphere (land), hydrosphere (water), & atmosphere (air) Water Cycle Water Pollution (rivers, lakes, & groundwater) becoming more unsuitable for life. Weather predictions: -based on changing cloud types & fronts -observations & measurements are vital/important (what is happening now --> here and other places) Materials move from the land, to water, to the air - Lithosphere (land), hydrosphere (water), & atmosphere (air) Water Cycle Water Pollution (rivers, lakes, & groundwater) becoming more unsuitable for life. 4 Weather Cont…. Reading weather maps (to interpret local, regional, & national weather) Biomes: based on temperature & precipitation/climate Water cycle is associated with different weather-related events (tornadoes, floods, droughts, hurricanes, etc.) Reading weather maps (to interpret local, regional, & national weather) Biomes: based on temperature & precipitation/climate Water cycle is associated with different weather-related events (tornadoes, floods, droughts, hurricanes, etc.)

5 LIFE SCIENCES Interactions between organisms or populations through symbiotic relationships (they help each other out: predator- prey, parasitism, mutualism, commensalism) Number of organisms in ecosystem depends on amount of biotic (living) & abiotic (non-living) resources. (MILKWEED BUGS) Some environmental changes occur slowly/some quickly Natural occurrences & human activity affect ecosystems Solar energy is transferred to chemical energy in multicellular organisms, & used to carry out functions Organisms are extremely diverse Interactions between organisms or populations through symbiotic relationships (they help each other out: predator- prey, parasitism, mutualism, commensalism) Number of organisms in ecosystem depends on amount of biotic (living) & abiotic (non-living) resources. 6 PHYSICAL SCIENCES Matter can change forms, but total amount of matter remains same (water, air, etc.) Potential vs. Kinetic Energy Different forms of energy (electrical, mechanical, chemical, thermal, nuclear, radiant, & acoustic) -Energy can change forms but total amount of energy remains constant Energy transformation in a simple closed system (flashlight) Matter can change forms, but total amount of matter remains same (water, air, etc.) Potential vs. Kinetic Energy Different forms of energy (electrical, mechanical, chemical, thermal, nuclear, radiant, & acoustic) -Energy can change forms but total amount of energy remains constant Energy transformation in a simple closed system (flashlight)

7 SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY Science & technology are interconnected and using technology involves assessment of the benefits, risks & costs. Science & technology only answer some questions and human problems Science & technology are interconnected and using technology involves assessment of the benefits, risks & costs. 8 SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY Variables Science = Asking & Finding Answers to Questions Using appropriate tools There may be more than one good way! Graphs, tables, & charts… math & science are two very important concepts Sci-Fair Concepts (Scientific Method) Variables Science = Asking & Finding Answers to Questions Using appropriate tools There may be more than one good way! 9 SCIENTIFIC WAYS OF KNOWING REPETITION BUILDS ACCURACY!!! Doing experiments over again reduces bias The work of science requires a variety of human abilities & qualities that are helpful in daily life (reasoning, creativity, skepticism, openness) REPETITION BUILDS ACCURACY!!!
