2 http://wireless.ece.drexel.edu - DREXEL WIRELESS SYSTEMS LAB - DREXEL UNIVERSITY 2 Testbed Needs “Beyond” Cognitive Radio Cognitive Radio: Biologically inspired algorithms for radios to sense and adapt to surroundings using various degrees of freedom (e.g., spectrum, antennas, modulation, coding, propagation medium) Extend the flexibility of SDR/CR to include capabilities provided by new antenna technologies (often ignored in “traditional” cognitive approaches) A B C D E F Metamaterial Transmission Line Metamaterial Substrate Transparent Antennas Wearable and Flexible Antennas

3 http://wireless.ece.drexel.edu - DREXEL WIRELESS SYSTEMS LAB - DREXEL UNIVERSITY 3 Testbed Needs “Beyond” Cognitive Radio Support legacy protocols and new protocols within a single, scalable hardware /software architecture –Current testbeds predominantly limited to 802.11 speeds (ADC/DAC, processing limitations) –Hardware/software design is tough and has a high cost of entry –Need for “scalable” and flexible reference designs that allow for the rapid prototyping of various protocols (802.11, WiMAX, MB-UWB) within a common software architecture –Needs to be available to the community and online for remote access/experimentation Modularity in design to support a wide range of carrier frequencies and take the “radio” out of SDR/CR when necessary –Reusable baseband with modular daughtercards (e.g., different radio frequencies, line of sight optical, free space optical, ultrasonic)
