Unit 1: Number Sense Lesson 8 – Exponent Laws Look at all of the examples…. What do you notice about the bases? In order to apply any of these exponent laws the BASES MUST BE THE SAME!
9
Unit 1: Number Sense Lesson 8 – Exponent Laws Power of Power: Bases must be the same. Multiply the exponents and keep the base the same. Dividing: Bases must be the same. Subtract the exponents and keep the base the same. Multiplying: Bases must be the same. Add the exponents and keep the base the same.

Unit 1: Number Sense Lesson 8 – Exponent Laws What about Adding and Subtracting? Example: 2 2 + 2 3
11
Unit 1: Number Sense Lesson 8 – Exponent Laws The exponent laws DO NOT apply for adding and subtracting.
12
Unit 1: Number Sense Lesson 8 – Exponent Laws Exponents apply to all parts of the term inside brackets. The coefficient and the variable. (3x)2(3x)2
13
Unit 1: Number Sense Lesson 8 – Exponent Laws Evaluate: (3x) 2
14
Unit 1: Number Sense Lesson 8 – Exponent Laws Evaluate: (3x 2 ) 2
15
Unit 1: Number Sense Lesson 8 – Exponent Laws Evaluate: (3 2 )(3 5 )
16
Unit 1: Number Sense Lesson 8 – Exponent Laws Evaluate: ((3x 5 )) 2 +(3x) 2
17
Unit 1: Number Sense Lesson 8 – Exponent Laws What about 0 as an exponent?
