Let x = any number, what equations can you write for the sentence, three times a number, increased by 5, is 13?

4. STEPS (Translate Sentences into Equations)
Three steps to writing a two-step equation
WORDS: Describe the situation. Use only the most important words.
VARIABLE: Define a variable to represent the unknown quantity.
EQUATION: Translate your verbal model into an algebraic expression or equation.

5. Practice
A group of friends has decided to go to the aquarium together. Each person pays $7.50 to get in. They spend a total of $40 for the shark exhibit in addition to their tickets. The total cost is $70. How many people went to the aquarium?

6. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?
At a restaurant in Meridian 4 people can sit comfortably around a dining table, one on each side. If you push two tables together six people can fit. What if you pushed together 3 tables end to end? 7 tables? 30 tables? Find a way to figure out the number of people at 57 tables or 213 tables or any number of tables. Demonstrate several strategies.
