3. Maize research institute – Knezha The Maize Research Institute in the town of Kneja was founded in 1924 with the purpose of creating an experimental field to the practical agricultural school. In 1931, the experimental field was transformed into Agricultural Experimental Station, which has lead to widening of the scientific researches.

4. In 1950 the Experimental Station was transformed into Institute in Agrotechnics. In 1954, the Institute in Agrotechnics was jointed together with the Stock-breeding Farming and a complex Scientific and Research Institute was founded with the purpose to serve the North-Western and Central Northern part of Bulgaria. 5. Since 1962, following the reorganization of the research work in Bulgaria, the Institute has been specialized into Maize Research Institute. In 1982, the Maize Research Institute became a member of the Academy of Agriculture as established, and since 2000, as permanent scientific link in the system of the National Center for Agrarian Sciences. The scientific and research programs are implemented by 20 scientific workers and 4 specialists with higher specialized education in the field of Selection, Genetics, Phytopathology, Entomology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Agrochemistry, Soil Conditioning, Herbology, Economics, etc. The total number of staff is at about 100 persons.
