I’ve Got A Plan Alternate Plans For Economic Relief A Webquest By Brian Wendell Photo-http://newdeal.feri.org/images/ab29.gif

Introduction It is the 1930’s and you have just celebrated your 60 th birthday. You are out of work, too old to compete with younger workers, too old to go into the CCC, and are really getting quiet frustrated. Franklin Delano Roosevelt has implemented his New Deal. One part of this plan is the Social Security Act. It will provide a pension for retired workers and their spouses should someone is not able to work. You are relieved that someone is going to help older Americans. But wait. There are other plans, ones that sound pretty good. Which one would best benefit the majority of Americans?http://newdeal.feri.org/carbonhill/l27.htm

Task You are to research the various relief plans and decide which one would be best for you and America. You will be presenting your recommendation to the local senior citizen club. You will create a persuasive argument justifying your recommendation of one of the relief programs. http://www.ssa.gov/history/fcspeech.html

Procedure 1. 1. Research the websites on the following slide. 2. 2. Create a list of the programs that were being proposed. Include background information on those proposing the plans and the disadvantages and advantages of each. 3. 3. Create a persuasive argument supporting one of the proposals. 4. 4. The teacher will ask for volunteers to present their arguments to the class. 5. 5. After the arguments have been made, the senior citizen club will vote on one of the arguments. http://newdeal.feri.org/library/photo_details.cfm?PhotoID=5683&ProjC atID=10268&CatID=12&subCatID=1054

Conclusion Now that your economic well being is saved into your golden years, you can look back at all of the alternate plans and critics of FDR and his New Deal. While most Americans supported him and his efforts, there were those that just didn’t agree with him and offered to America what they thought was a better plan. How has support for senior citizens evolved since the Great Depression? Will there be a “old age pension” plan for you when you are older? Good luck! http://www.ssa.gov/history/elderlyposter.html
