Today we will be learning: how to carry out a survey how to organise results and show them as a bar chart.

Mental Activity We are going to play a game to practise adding and subtracting.

We are going to count around the class. Here are the rules. The first person adds 5 to a number. The next person subtracts 1. if we start with 4 the next number will be 9 then 8 then 13 then 12 and so on. For example:

Start on 5. Give the next number in the pattern before the answer appears.

Main Activity Today we are going to be looking at data. What does the word “data” mean? Data is another word for information.

Handling data includes: collecting the data displaying the data using the data to help us to answer questions.

A class of 30 children were asked to choose a favourite colour from red, yellow or blue. If they did not like any of the colours, they could choose “None of these”. Their votes were collected using a tally chart.

How many does each tally show? 7 Which was easier to count? Why?

How many children voted for each colour? None of these Blue Yellow Red 12 6 8 4

We are going to make a bar chart to show the results. Red12 Yellow6 Blue8 None4 How many squares tall will our tallest bar be? The horizontal and vertical lines are called axes.

Group Work Carry out a group survey and make a tally of the results. Draw a bar chart to show the data. Practise answering questions using information from bar charts. Work with a partner. Write four questions that could be used to carry out a survey.
