2 History McLean Hospital is A Psychiatric hospital founded in 1811 and was originally located in Charlestown Massachusetts and was moved to Belmont Massachusetts in the late 1800’s Mclean Hospital for the Insane got its name from one of the early contributors to this institution, Dr. John Mclean. Mclean was a crucial factor to the construction of the hospital, he invested much money into it and is the reason it was ever able to open. In the mid 1990’s Mclean Hospital was faced with turmoil. Revenue was falling due to recent changes in healthcare, to keep the hospital open, the company decided to sell a certain portion of it’s land to the city of Belmont for construction.

4 Sylvia Plath Sylvia Plath was admitted into Mclean Mental Hospital after an attempted suicide. After admission, Plath was able to enjoy tea, a personal fireplace in her private room, and occasional horseback riding. While attending Mclean Hospital Sylvia Plath wrote her famous novel “The Bell Jar” Ten years after her release from Mclean Hospital, Sylvia Plath committed suicide by sticking her head in a gas stove while her children played in the next room.

5 Ray charles Ray Charles was sent to Mclean Hospital after a drug bust.
Since Mclean was a prestigious place for stars, the judge sentenced him to a 90 day stint at the hospital.

7 John mcleans hospital history
John McLean was named the hospitals beneficiary after investing more than $120,000 into it. He opened the first psychiatric hospital of nursing in 1882. His hospital was the first in the United States to study the role and biological factors of mental illness.
