1 Review WEATHERING Changes Earth by breaking rocks and other matter into smaller particles called sediment. It is a gradual process. Two types – Mechanical (or Physical) and Chemical There are 4 main types of mechanical weathering, and 2 main types of chemical weathering

2 Types of Weathering Chemical: Mechanical/ Physical: Oxidation
Dissolving by acids Mechanical/ Physical: Ice wedging Release of pressure Abrasion Plant Action

3 EROSION and DEPOSITION
Review EROSION and DEPOSITION Erosion takes away land in one place and builds land in another. Deposition is when moving water, ice, wind, or gravity drops a load of Earth materials in a new place. Examples: Rainwater running off land carries away sediment. Moving water erodes land at the shore, waves carry sand off one beach, and deposit it on another.

4 EROSIONAL FEATURES Moving water: Gullies, stream or river, delta
Ice: Glaciers, valleys Gravity: Landslides, mudflows Wind: Sand dunes, Sandstone arches…

5 Satellite Imagery Content objective: Interpret topographic maps and satellite views to identify land and erosional features and predict how these features may be reshaped by weathering. Student expectation: The student knows that natural events can impact Earth systems.

6 Big Ideas Comparing satellite images reveals slow and subtle land changes as well as rapid ones. How does Earth’s surface change? How does technology help us better understand landforms and track change over time? Are satellite images examples of 2D or 3D models?

7 The Grand Canyon

8 The Grand Canyon is an erosional feature created by water and wind
70 million years old Question: Which type of weathering occurred?

9 Hurricane Sandy, NJ 2012 Before and After

10 Observations: Weathering (Abrasion and Moving Water), runoff, soil displacement, rapid change.

11 Tracking changes over time
“Researchers from a University in China have warned that dozens of mountains have already been flattened (to create land to build on) and this is causing air and water pollution, soil erosion and flooding”
