1 Introduction to Drama Section 1 – What is Drama?

2 Welcome to Drama On the front of your drama jotter, please write the following: Your Name Your register class and practical class Your Teacher’s Name Your Drama Class room.

3 Learning Intentions By the end of this lesson you will:
Understand the departments health and safety rules. Know what drama is and why we have drama lessons. Know what skills you will learn in drama. Have begun to get to know each other.

4 Drama In drama you will learn about performance and theatre.
As well as this you will learn and develop important skills that will help you both inside and outside the drama classroom.

5 The Drama Classroom Look around the classroom and see if you can spot any differences between the drama classroom and other classrooms, then complete the table in your workbook. The Drama Classroom Other Classrooms

6 Health and Safety Rules
With all of the classroom differences in mind, read through the health and safety rules on the following slide. It is very important that you follow these rules every lesson so we can all learn, have fun and be safe!

7 Health and Safety Rules
No horseplay No chewing gum Do not swing on chairs Do not throw anything Do not put pencils/pens in your mouth Do not run No eating Listen carefully to instructions Store bags neatly out of the way Do not block fire escapes Beware of tripping hazards (i.e. curtains/long costumes/wires and cables) Put all equipment away tidily Take care when carrying/using sharp equipment Handle props with care Check equipment is safe to use (i.e. no cracks/chips in crockery, ripped hems on costumes, middle bar in tripod for lights is off the floor.) If you have any doubts about electrical equipment – get your teacher immediately. Take care jewellery (i.e. hoop earrings/long necklaces) does not get caught/pulled. Take care when working with different levels Beware of spills – always clean up spills immediately. Do not operate electrical equipment without teacher supervision Only operate lighting desk when working with LX Ensure electrical equipment is switched off when unattended or after use. Take plugs out at end of day. Keep electrical equipment away from flammable materials No liquids near electrical equipment Always check for anyone affected by quick flashing lights before using strobe light. No naked flame to be used (i.e. candle) Maintain high standards of hygiene when using department costume or make up. Make sure stage fighting is properly choreographed Be aware of any make-up allergies
