2 Our Project The design of a wrist-worn heart rate monitor based on the Texas Instruments MSP430 microcontroller platform.

3 Theory of Operation Heart rate Monitor ▫Utilizes red and infrared LEDs to measure light reflection off the top of the wrist ▫Measures light intensity of reflected light

4 Determining the heart rate The infrared data was windowed and then filtered to 1-3 Hz or 1-5 Hz, which typically corresponds to the frequency of the heart rate. Detected the peaks in the filtered data to determine the heart rate.

5 Movement compensation Movement introduced periodic components to the signal that had much higher power than the heart rate components. The accelerometers were used to estimate the location and the amount of motion in the data.

6 Heart Rate Display Highcharts, a free to use Javascript application, was used to create a moving display of the data. Plots the data samples at a rate of 62.5 Hz.
