Engineering Materials, Functions, Energy & Motion

Materials Raw materials are natural substances that undergo a transformation in order to be used. (ex. A tree gets transformed in to planks of wood) The transformed material is used to build objects based on the materials physical and chemical properties. MetalWood CompositesPlastics CeramicsGlass StoneTextiles

What are some properties of these materials??? MATERIALPROPERTIES Metal Wood Plastic Composites Ceramic Glass

Mechanical Functions The function of an object, machine or system is its role or purpose. Basic functions: Links: the connection between two parts (any time two parts are in contact with each other, they form a link, ex. a coat hook attached to a wall by a screw. The hook and wall for a “link”) Guiding control: one or more parts of a system allow a portion of the system to move 2 types: guiding rotation guiding translation

Energy Energy is the ability of a system to perform work (or accomplish a task) There are several forms of energy It is possible to transform energy from one form to another Energy can not be created or destroyed, only transformed WHICH FORMS OF ENERGY HAVE YOU USED TODAY SO FAR? AND WHY?

Forms of Energy: Potential energy: the energy an object possesses due to its position above a surface. Elastic energy: the energy an object possesses when its shape is changed through stretching or compression. Kinetic energy: the energy of objects in motion. Radiant energy: the energy from a light source. Electrical energy: the energy of moving charged particles, transmitted along wires.

Magnetic energy: the energy that magnets possess due their relation to each other. Thermal energy: energy present in all objects which results in heat being given off Chemical energy: the energy released during a chemical reaction. Nuclear energy: the energy contained within the nucleus of atoms. Acoustic energy: the energy produced when matter vibrates (results in sound).

Energy Transformation CAN YOU THINK OF ANY EXAMPLES? INITIAL FORM OF ENERGY RESULTING FORM OF ENERGY DESCRIPTION HYDROELECTRICITY PRODUCTION CEILING FAN LIGHT BULBS IPOD SOLAR PANELS

MOTION The movement of an object A force is required to trigger a motion 4 types: Rectilinear (straight line) Alternating (in one direction, then the other) Circular (yup – in a circle or curve) Oscillatory (back and forth – like a swing) What can slow a motion? What can increase the motion an object exhibits?
