5  ELA Curriculum Common Core Standards  Reading  Writing  Speaking  Listening College Preparatory & Career Readiness  The standards establish guidelines for English language arts (ELA).  Literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects.  Students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas.  The standards promote the literacy skills and concepts required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines.

6 ELA Curriculum  Students will respond to literature in an essay format, using academic language, literary terms and scholarly research.  Students will use critical thinking to develop original ideas, applying academic integrity when using credible sources for evidence. 7   Students will incorporate documented citations in the style prescribed by the Modern Language Association (MLA).  Students will evolve as scholars and effective communicators through engaging activities, collaborative exercises, informative discussions, project-based learning, standards based assessments, active reading and in-depth research. 8  Daily Instruction  Writing Journal Prompt – Students enter the class ready to critically think, cold write and pair-share on any given topic each day, building writing muscle as well as the skill to develop a point-of-view.

9  Daily Instruction  Vocabulary Notebook – Students will unlock over 14,000 words in the English language through daily vocabulary drill
