Making Inferences (continued) Monday, September 15, 2014

Application to Text TEXT OPTIONS: “The Gift” by Li-Young Lee pg. 254 “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden pg. 256 What inferences can you make about the narrator’s relationship with his father in each poem? Support your claims with evidence from the text (give us line numbers!).

Let’s practice with “The Gift” Evidence/ObservationsInferences In one sentence, how can you describe the narrator’s relationship with his father? Make sure that your claim is supported by the evidence you collected and the inferences you made. “shiny silver splinter from my palm” (1) The narrator is in pain. “recited a story in a low voice” (2) “[…] his hands / two measures of tenderness / he laid against my face” (9-11) His father is taking a lot of care/precaution to distract him while also showing how much he cares for his son.

Your turn. Read “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden. Pull at least three pieces of evidence that help you to see the relationship between the narrator and his father and add them to your graphic organizer. Make inferences about the narrator’s relationship with his father by using your schema to help you interpret the evidence you pulled from the text.

Check for Understanding Help your partner reflect on their learning today by asking them a question about today’s lesson. If you’re stuck, try one of these question stems… What is/are…? When should…? Why is it important to…? What must…?

i.e. What are the steps for making an inference? 1.Read. 2.Make observations. 3.Consult your schema. 4.Make an inference.

Check for Understanding Help your partner reflect on their learning today by asking them a question about today’s lesson. If you’re stuck, try one of these question stems… What is/are…? When should…? Why is it important to…? What must…?

For Homework Self reflect on today’s lesson; add at least three questions to the margin of your Cornell notes that will help you review what inferences are the process you use to make inferences.
